Things to say if someone is rude or unpleasant

Someone has been rude and unpleasant to you. The behaviour could be mildly aggressive meaning they are not respecting your rights. Any response made should try to establish appropriate boundaries on the behaviour.
It is helpful to tell them what the problem behaviour is and what behaviour you expect.

Here are some examples of ways to respond:

  • If there is an issue which involves me please let me know. Whatever the problem I still expect to be treated with respect.
  • I don't respond to that kind of language. Let me know when you are ready to talk more respectfully.
  • I think we need to discuss this but only in a respectful manner.
  • If you want to engage in a discussion you must treat me with respect.
  • I find it impossible to work out what the problem is when spoken too that way. Lets discuss this in a respectful manner.
  • We need to talk about this in a professional way.
