10 days to a less defiant child

10 Days to a Less Defiant Child by Jeffrey Bernstein, PhD is recommended reading. This is the book I wish I had when I started out in youth work. Working with youth at risk you dealt with lots of different sorts of behaviours. I had lots of parents asking me how we did it and ...
... you never had the time to answer them with all the details. But this book explains it pretty well. It could have helped support the parents to avoid the traps they can fall into that do not help young people learn appropriate ways of responding to situations.

It breaking things down into 10 sections and tries to help carers pace themselves. It covers why children act defiant, understanding children, avoiding the yelling trap, avoiding power struggles, reinforcing positive changes, consistency, getting support from others, at school, stubborn obstacles and working in the long term.

I liked it solutions focused approach as well as getting parents to evaluate their own behaviour and methods of responding to their child’s inappropriate behaviour. It is very readable due to the simple language and design. Even though it is aimed at parents, others such as youth workers and teachers can gain a lot from it. With excellent insights and practical advise, I recommend it to anyone having to deal with problem child behaviour.
